Greetings MPAU members and friends:
It is a busy and exciting time for the MPAU indeed.
We are excited about the addition of Susan Edwards to our lobbying team. Susan works directly with our long time lobbyist Charlie Evans, and has been brought on as direct communication support to our membership. Her recent emails directly to our individual members has created a much needed transparency, and effective tool so that we can act to support our industry and cause. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Susan and Charlie. If you are an active member of the MPAU, and you are not receiving informative emails from Susan Edwards, please contact me at president@mpau.org.
We also would like to send out a big thanks to Jeff Miller. Jeff Miller was invited to present to the Utah Business, Economic Development, and Labor Appropriations subcommittee this morning to explain the importance of increasing our Motion Picture Incentive Program (MPIP) fund. He was invited to speak due to his position as the producer on many of the projects that have filmed in Utah that receive funding from the MPIP. Those of you who were able to tune in and listen will be able to agree that Mr. Miller did an amazing and effective job. He made clear strong points, and was able to field questions from committee members that seemed to put their concerns to rest. He also received many supportive comments from other committee members. We could not have asked for a better presentation, or a better outcome.
With support from other MPAU board members, and other members of our film community, our board member Matias Alvarez was able to produce a short film that is included in our package to the legislators for this current legislative session. We are thankful and grateful for the hard work of Matias, and all our board members during this important time.

I also had the fulfilling opportunity to work directly with The Motion Picture Association of America, to produce “one-sheets” that compare the film tax incentive programs of states similar to Utah. The information on these one sheets is also included in our legislative packets, and can be accessed via the links below. It is an effective way for the MPAU to show legislators that we must grow the MPIP fund if we want to keep substantial amount of money in our state.
We would also like to take this time to thank Charlie Evans, for taking the time to present our legislative strategy at our MPAU zoom members meeting last month. With so much new leadership on the hill this year, Charlie has had his work cut out for him. We are grateful that he took the time to communicate directly with our membership regarding his ideas and goals for this current legislative session. Thank you Charlie.
The MPAU is carefully following the advice of the CDC, and watching the progress of vaccinations in our state. We can see the dim light at the end of the tunnel and it will only be growing brighter in the coming weeks and months.
Thank you for your time and support, and I sincerely look forward to seeing you in person sometime in 2021. Be well.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Leone
