Greetings MPAU members and friends:
I want to start this Spring newsletter by thanking all of the individuals and organizations that worked hard to support us during our push to increase funding to our Utah Motion Picture Incentive Program (MPIP) during this last legislative session.
A big THANK YOU to Charlie Evans, Spencer Stokes, Susan Edwards, Senator Winterton, The Utah Film Studios, and The Utah Film Commission. We were able to secure an additional $1.6 million for our tax incentive program, and an additional $500,000 to Utah's smaller cash fund for local productions.
We are happy and relieved that Utah State Bill 167 passed, but are also very aware that our MPIP will need additional funding on an on-going basis to support a robust film industry in our state.
The work of the MPAU is ongoing, and the need to support our organization in its goal to build a bigger and better film industry in Utah has never been more important. We will continue to need your membership support, and the support of your co-workers and colleagues as we continue this important uphill climb for years to come.
As Spring unfolds, and more cast and crew members receive their COVID-19 vaccinations, we should be seeing at least some production returning to Utah. The Utah Film Commission has recently approved 5 new productions for the MPIP. Details of these projects can be found on the UFC website here https://film.utah.gov
In other news, May 2021 will be my final month as the President of the MPAU. It is hard to believe that my four year term has passed so quickly. It has been an honor to serve, and I am confident I am leaving the organization in the very capable hands with our current vice-president Jeff Johnson, of Jeff Johnson Casting.
Jeff will be stepping into the leadership role of President of the MPAU starting on June 1st. He has a deep understanding of the history of the MPAU, and the history of the film industry in Utah. Jeff has been a member of the MPAU board since the MPAU’s inception, and is well versed in our goals and challenges. He will excel in this role with the support of our board and membership.
The MPAU is also excited to be in its beginning stages of planning our next in-person networking event. Depending on the pace of the vaccination roll out, we are hoping to have an event where we can all meet safely in person in August or September. Please be on the lookout for a “save the date” notice, as our plans begin to come to fruition.
We will also be sending out a membership survey here soon to get some feedback from you all on ways we can improve as an organization and how better to serve you all. Be on the lookout for that as well.
I am honored and humbled to have had this opportunity to lead the MPAU, and look forward to continuing to support the organization as a devoted member, as I step off the board of directors in the next few weeks. Thank you for your support and help.
I wish you and yours all the best for a beautiful Spring, and look forward to seeing you on set soon.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Leone
